Часть между Асуаном и Хартумом известна как Нубия, и остров Элефантина здесь выступает в качестве границы между Египтом и Нубией. На острове есть руины старого храма Хнума, тянущиеся до первого каскада Нила. Согласно античной мифологии, в пещере на острове жил Хнум — бог с головой барана, покровитель водопадов и каскадов, хранитель Нила. С момента строительства плотины, продуктивность сельского хозяйства в долине увеличилась в несколько раз, теперь во многих частях Сахары выращиваются сельскохозяйственные культуры, а годовой объем производства гидроэнергетики составляет более 2 ГВт.

Асуан сегодня часто сравнивают с Лазурным берегом, хочется особенно отметить красивый вид и особую атмосферу этого курорта. В конце набережной расположен знаменитый отель Old Cataract, где проживали такие знаменитости, как президент США Джимми Картер, принцесса Диана, Уинстон Черчилль. Этот отель фигурировал в одноименном фильме, снятом по знаменитому роману Агаты Кристи — «Смерть на Ниле». Между Асуаном и Луксор курсирует множество круизных и прогулочных судов. Наиболее благоприятное время для посещения — с октября по март, когда температура находится между 12 и 32 градусами.
